সাহিত্যিক, সাংবাদিক, প্রকাশক ও রাজনীতিবিদ কলম্বিয় গাব্রিয়েল গার্সিয়া মার্কেস ১৯২৭ সালের ৬ মার্চ জন্ম গ্রহন করেন। তার আরেক নাম ছিল গাবো।
.৯৮২ সালে তিনি পান সাহিত্যের শ্রেষ্ঠ পুরুষ্কার নোবেল প্রাইজ।
বিংশ শতকের নামজাদা ও জনপ্রিয় লেখকদের মধ্যে তিনি ছিলেন অন্যতম। বিংশ শতাব্দীর শেষার্ধ ছিল তাঁর পদচারনায় প্রকম্পিত।
গাব্রিয়েল গার্সিয়া মার্কেস (স্পেনীয় ভাষায় তাঁর পূর্ণ নাম Gabriel José de la Concordia García Márquez গাব্রিয়েল্ খ়োসে দে লা কোঙ্কোর্দিয়া গার্সিয়া মার্কেস্, (জন্মঃ ৬ মার্চ, ১৯২৭ - মৃত্যু: ১৭ এপ্রিল, ২০১৪ ), যিনি গাবো নামেও পরিচিত, একজন কলম্বীয় সাহিত্যিক, সাংবাদিক, প্রকাশক ও রাজনীতিবিদ ছিলেন। তিনি ১৯৮২ খ্রিস্টাব্দে সাহিত্যে নোবেল পুরস্কার লাভ করেন। নিঃসঙ্গতার এক শতাব্দী বইয়ের লেখক হিসেবে তিনি বিশেষ পরিচিত। গাব্রিয়েল গার্সিয়া মার্কেস জীবনের বেশিরভাগ সময় বসবাস করেছেন মেক্সিকো এবং ইউরোপে।
চার্লস ডিকেন্স, লিও তলস্তয় ও আর্ণেস্ট হেমিংওয়ের সমকখহ লেখক হিসেবে তিনি ছিলেন স্বীকৃত।
এই বিশ্ব বিখ্যাত কলম্বিয়ান ঔপন্যাসিক বিংশ শতাব্দীর শেষার্দ্ধের সবচেয়ে আলোচিত, সবচেয়ে প্রভাবশালী লেখক হিসেবে আবির্ভুত হয়েছিলেন। জীবনের শেষ দুই যুগ তিনি ক্যান্সারের সঙ্গে যুদ্ধ করে বেঁচেছিলেন। এ সময় তাঁর লেখালিখি কমে আসে। জনসংযোগ ও ভ্রমণ হয়ে পড়ে সীমিত। এমনকী ২০০৪-এ আত্মজীবনীর প্রথম খণ্ড লিভিং টু টেল আ টেইল প্রকাশের পর পরিকল্পিত ২য় এবং ৩য় খণ্ড আর রচনা করা হয়ে ওঠেনি। তিনি দূরারোগ্য লিম্ফেঠিক ক্যান্সারে ভুগছিলেন। ২০১২'র জুলই থেকে তিনি স্মৃতি বিনষ্টিতে আক্রান্ত হন।
সাহিত্যবিশারদদের মতে তিনি হোর্হে লুইস বোর্হেস (Jorge Luis Borges) এবং হুলিও কোর্তাসারের (Julio Cortázar) সাথে বিংশ শতাব্দীর অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ দক্ষিণ আমেরিকান কথাসাহিত্যিক। তিনি একই সঙ্গে জনপ্রিয় এবং মহৎ লেখক হিসেবে চার্লস ডিকেন্স, লেভ তলস্তয় ও আর্ণেস্ট হেমিংওয়ের সঙ্গে তাঁর নাম এক কাতারে উচ্চারিত হতো।
নোবল পুরুষ্কার দেয়ার সময় সুইডিস একাডেমী ঘোষনা করেছিল যে তার প্রতিটি সাহিত্যকর্ম প্রকাশ পৃথিবীর একেকটি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ঘটনার সমকক্ষ।
তিনি ছিলেন রাজনীতি মনষ্ক এবং আম জনতার রাজুনীতির সাথে ছিলেন গভীর ভাবে সম্পৃক্ত।
কিউবার লৌহ মানব ফিদেল ক্যাস্ট্রোর সাথে তার বন্ধুত্ব ছিল প্রগাঢ়।

গতকাল, ১৭ এপ্রিল, ২০১৪ এ গ্যাব্রিয়েল গার্সিয়া মার্কেজ দীর্ঘ দিন ক্যান্সারে ভোগার পর, নিউমোনিয়ায় আক্রান্ত হয়ে, মধ্য দুপুরে মেক্সিকো সিটিতে মৃত্যু বরন করেন।
