দেশের বর্তমান পারিস্থিতে সাপ্তাহিক "Holiday"

"Holiday" বাংলাদেশের বহু পুরানো ইংরেজি সাপ্তাহিক এর সমসাময়িক পরিস্থিতির পর্যবেক্ষনমুলক প্রতিবেদন গুলো গভীর পর্যালোচনা অনুসন্ধানমুলক, যুক্তিসংগত ও চিন্তা করতে সুযোগ করে দেয় বলে আমি মনে করি। সাপ্তাহিকটি ইংরেজিতে বলে অনেকরই পড়া হয় না। কিন্তু "হলিডে" র ইংরেজি ও বেশ উঁচু মানের বলে আমার মনে হয়।

যেহেতু প্রতিবেদনটি ইংরেজি ছিল, আমি অনুবাদ করত পরে কোন এক সময় এটা এখানে উপস্থান করব। মুল Article টি ছবির শেষে দিচ্ছি।

Our hearts are choked by the acerbic smell of gun powders and the excruciating wailing of mothers and wives bereft of their sons and husbands.

Only few decades after the mighty Bengal lost its independence to the British in 1757, the French Revolution witnessed the unleashing of a reign of terror that had lasted from September 5, 1793 to July 28, 1794. Are we witnessing the same now?

Although the mindless violence in France lingered only less than a year, the fratricidal conflict between rival political factions from the Girondins and the Jacobins generated waves of mass executions of what the mob termed as the “enemies of the revolution.” The death toll ranged in the tens of thousands, with 16,594 executed by guillotine -2,639 in Paris alone - and another 25,000 in summary executions.



Revolutionary upheaval

Those who think Bangladesh today is undergoing another revolutionary upheaval must know that every historic spasm of a nation is accompanied by anarchy first, which unleashes similar reign of terror. We may have begun to witness such an unfurling of tragedy before our eyes.

The more the rule of law gets rendered inoperative, the more the people resort to choosing how to defend themselves and who to align with. And, with the gradual withering of the government and the governance, huge void is created in the far-flung rural areas which get filled by competing forces within and their external backers from without.

The Manikgonj massacre is one of such tragedies where dozens were shot by police last week and five succumbed to martyrdom.

Let’s not forget these are axiomatic text book scenarios that are unavoidable, unless we change our attitudes to pull away from the brink.



Withering rule of law

There is no denying that the rule of law has taken a beating in Bangladesh since the arrival to power of the current AL-led administration. For, the priority of the government, from the very beginning, has been to decimate its perceived and real oppositions. This has been a government of the AL, by the AL, for the AL.

To prove such an assertion, one has to glance back to see who all faced executions, torture and persecutions since 2009. The previous four years were marred by incidents of revenge, retribution and remorseless obliteration of dissents of any kind.

The accused of the Mujib murder case aside, the country’s prisons are overstuffed with over 11,000 political prisoners of various hues; numbers of Jamat-Shibir and BNP denominations being predominant. The victims within the armed forces will also total many thousands.
