THE BEST EXAMPLE/PATTERN IN PROPHET MUHAMMAD (S)

Some Muslims/Mullah often quote the following verse from the holy Quran along with the verse 53:3-4 to support their claim that hadith/sunnah has the same authority with Quran. The verse they quote is…

“There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern/example for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often” (33:21).

Muslims therefore rightly say that we need to follow this “excellent example”, they also say that we can follow this example by following what people reported about him in the books of Hadith, however the above verse certainly refers to the Qur’an

We have already discussed the verse 53:3-4, and proved the Mullah’s claim of referring hadith/Sunnah is void. (Please see the writing under the headline “The Only Revelation to Muhammad (s) was Quran”)

Now, we will analyze this verse 33:21 with the light of the Quran. But before proceed further, the reader is requested to read the chapter “The Quran is fully detailed and self-explanatory”

Since Quran is fully detailed and self-explanatory, it does not need other books, saying, traditions of ancestors to explain it. Therefore, we will see in light of Quran what Allah means by saying it.

So what are the examples of “excellent examples/pattern?”

Allah mention several examples that the prophet followed:

Excellent Example 1: Muhammad (s) associate nothing with Allah

Say, [O Muhammad], "I only invoke my Lord and do not associate with Him anyone."(72:20)

Excellent Example 2: Muhammad (s) followed nothing except what was revealed to him. In other words, he only followed Quran

And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, those who do not expect the meeting with Us say, "Bring us a Qur'an other than this or change it." Say, [O Muhammad], "It is not for me to change it on my own accord. I only follow what is revealed to me. Indeed I fear, if I should disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day."(10:15)

Excellent Example 3:
Muhammad (s) warns people by the Quran

"Say (O Muhammad), "What is the greatest testimony?" Say, "God is witness between me and you that this Quran has been inspired to me to warn you with it and whomever it reaches." 6:19

Excellent Example 4: Muhammad (s) judged only by the Quran

Indeed, We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth so you may judge between the people by that which Allah has shown you. And do not be for the deceitful an advocate (4:105)

…..

And We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], the Book in truth, confirming that which preceded it of the Scripture and as a criterion over it. So judge between them by what Allah has revealed and do not follow their inclinations away from what has come to you of the truth……(5:48)

And judge, [O Muhammad], between them by what Allah has revealed and do not follow their inclinations and beware of them, lest they tempt you away from some of what Allah has revealed to you. And if they turn away - then know that Allah only intends to afflict them with some of their [own] sins. And indeed, many among the people are defiantly disobedient. (5:49)

Excellent Example 5: Muhammad (s) seeks no one beside Allah to make rules

Shall I then seek a Ruler other than Allah? When He it is Who has revealed to you the Book (Qur’an, which is) distinctly detailed” (6:114)

Excellent Example 6: Muhammad (s) seeks no refuge other than Allah

[/su]“Say: “I call only upon my Lord and do not associate anyone else with Him.” Say: “I have no control over any good or evil that befalls you.” Say: “No one can protect me from Allah and I will never find any refuge apart from Him. My mission is only to make known His Messages.” “As for one who disobeys Allah and His Messenger, he shall abide in the Fire of Hell, remaining in it timelessly, for ever and ever.”” (72:20-23)

Excellent Example 7: Muhammad was concerned about the welfare of the souls of his people and he was compassionate with the believers.

Certainly a Messenger has come to you from among yourselves; grievous to him is your falling into distress, concerned over you; to the believers (he is) compassionate. But if they turn back, say: Allah is sufficient for me, there is no god but He; on Him do I rely, and He is the Lord of mighty power.” (9:128-129)

Excellent Example 8: Muhammad took part in interfaith dialogue calling other peoples to accept Allah alone

“Say, “People of the Book! Let us come to an agreement: that we should worship none but Allah and not associate any partners with Him and not set up mortals as gods besides Allah.” If they refuse, say, “Bear witness that we are Muslims.”” (3:64)

And there are more examples of Muhammad (s) in the Quran. Let’s see whether we follow his excellent examples/patterns in Quran that Allah mention for the mankind.

SL Excellent Pattern/Examples Questions to People Please answer

1 Muhammad (s) associate nothing with Allah Do we Muslim associate anything besides Allah? (This question has very broad meaning) Yes /No

2 He only followed Quran Do Muslims only follow Quran? What about hadith, fiqh, ijma etc? Yes /No

3 Muhammad (s) warns people by the Quran

Do we warn people by Quran? Yes /No

4 Muhammad (s) judged only by the Quran Do we judged only by Quran or by other books like hadith, fiqh, Ijma etc? Yes /No

5 Muhammad (s) seeks no one beside Allah to make rules

Do we seek others like Mullah, leaders, Imam etc besides Allah to make rules? Yes /No

6 Muhammad (s) seeks no refuge other than Allah Do we seek refuge other than Alllah? What about “Peer”, “Mazar”, Mullah? Yes/No

7 Muhammad was concerned about the welfare of the souls of his people and he was compassionate with the believers DO WE? Yes/No

8 Muhammad took part in interfaith dialogue calling other peoples to accept Allah alone

Have we ever done this? Yes/No

The above table was the brief summary of few out of many excellent examples of Muhammad(s) mentioned in the Quran. The reader may ask himself whether he is actually following the excellent examples or following something other than Allah mentioned.

Even then, the followers of hadith advocates that all believers must follow everything he did! This includes all his actions from the way he observed his prayers and other rituals, up to his personal habits such as: which hand he used to eat with, how long he grew his beard, with which foot he entered the toilet, how he blew his nose in the morning and even whether he urinated standing up or seated! Obviously this is not the message of 33:21 nor for that reason why God sends His messengers or what God wants us to learn from His messengers!

Even the proof is given to the Mullah, they denied for their own personal gain. So, if it were true that we should follow every action of the prophet that mentioned in hadith, let’s analyze their claim:

We must consider that the Prophet Muhammad was born into an Arab culture with many man-made traditions – he wore the clothes that they wore; he had a beard and so did the among the enemies of the Muslims; he ate as they did, with his hands and they probably always sat on the floor and they probably wore turbans or cloths on their heads etc…

The question is: are we to follow such cultural examples that the prophet followed? Are these the things that will make us better Muslims? Or is there another aspect of the example of the prophet that we must follow (mentioned above)? The answer is obvious.

As a point of interest and relevance to the discussion of Sunnah (example) and it being followed, we must note that Allah commanded the Prophet Muhammad and all of us through him that we all must follow the Prophet Ibrahim :

We read in the Quran that:

“Say: ‘Allah speaks the Truth: follow the religion of Ibrahim, the sane in faith; he was not of the Pagans.” (3:95)

Surely Ibrahim was an exemplar, obedient to Allah, upright, and he was not of the polytheists. He showed his gratitude for the favours of Allah, who chose him, and guided him to a Straight Way. And We gave him Good in this world, and he will be, in the Hereafter, in the ranks of the Righteous. So We have taught you the inspiration, ‘Follow the ways of Ibrahim the True in Faith, and he joined not gods with Allah.” (16:120-123)

There has already been for you an excellent pattern/example in Abraham and those with him,…

There has certainly been for you in them an excellent pattern/example for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day…(60:4,6)

So, I am asking the people how we can follow the religion of Ibrahim and his excellent examples as neither have we had any book called “hadith/sunnah of Ibrahim” nor the prophet Muhammad (s) had. How do we know what was the religion of Abraham? What were the excellent examples about him? At this point Mullah correctly says that the answer is given in Quran. If it is so, why don’t you apply the same principal for Muhammad (s)? Why don’t you take his examples from Quran? Who told you to do otherwise?

So, what was the excellent examples of Ibrahim?

1. Ibrahim was brave in speaking the truth to the family, people and elders around him (6:74,81, 21:54,66-67)

2. Ibrahim openly speaks the truth and even leaves his family and people and their idolatry and their enmity to Allah. (19:42-48)

3. Ibrahim renounces his own father once it becomes clear to him that his father is an enemy to Allah (9:114)

4. Ibrahim was merciful and tender-hearted (9:114, 11:75)

5. He was a good host to his guests (11:69), and many more.

Thus by reading the Qur’an we see a man who worshipped ONLY Allah and who openly proclaimed the truth and stood for it and renounced all around him who opposed it and even travelled away from them and their idolatry. He stood up to and criticized the elders and customs and religions of his time, but at the same time he was soft hearted and merciful. This is the example the “BEST EXAMPLES” we are to follow and not what he wore and how long his beard was or anything like this

Conclusion:

By analyzing the verse 33:21, we have found that Allah tells us that in Prophet Muhammad (s), we have excellent set of examples to follow, and we saw that these examples are also mentioned in the Quran. To prove that these examples are not every personal action of the prophet, Allah also tells Prophet Muhammad as well as us to follow the excellent examples of prophet Ibrahim as well. And, we also saw what examples Allah is talking about. So, the corrupted meaning of verse 33:21 of following every personal action of the prophet mentioned in the hadith is void.
