দুই দিন পূর্বে লিখেছিলাম এ বছর বর্ষা মৌসুম এখনও শেষ হয় নি; ২০০৭ সালে ঘূর্ণিঝড় সিডর আঘাত হেনেছিল নভেম্বর মাসের ১৬ তারিখ। উত্তর-পশ্চিম বঙ্গপোসাগের নিম্নচাপের সৃষ্টি হয়েছে শুনার পরে আমার অবস্থা হয়েছে বাংলা ভাষার প্রবাদের মতো "ঘরপোড়া গরু সিঁদুরে মেঘ দেখে ভয় পায়।"

কৃত্রিম ভূ-উপগ্রহ হতে প্রাপ্ত মেঘের চিত্র, মেঘের মধ্যে জ্বলিয় বাষ্পের পরিমাণ, বায়ু প্রবাহের দিক, ও বৃষ্টিপাতের প্রায় রিয়েল টাইম চিত্র পর্যবেক্ষণ করে দেখা যাচ্ছে যে নিম্নচাপের ফলে বরিশাল ও খুলনা বিভাগের উপকূলীয় এলাকায় বিশেষ করে সাতক্ষিরা, বাগেরহাট, খুলনা, ভোলা জেলায় ভারি বৃষ্টি হতে পারে। এখন পর্যন্ত ঘূর্ণিঝড়ের সম্ভাবনা কম বলে মনে হচ্ছে কারণ নিম্নচাপের কিছু অংশ ইতিমধ্যেই স্থল ভাগের উপর অবস্থান করছে ফলে ঘূর্ণিঝড় সৃষ্টির প্রধান শর্ত সমুদ্রের গরম পানির বাষ্পায়িত হওয়ার পরিমাণ অনেক কম।

১) Infrared satellite imagery: Infrared satellite technology works by sensing the temperature of infrared radiation being emitted into space from the earth and its atmosphere. Basically, all objects (including water, land, and clouds), radiate infrared light. In general, the temperature of the atmosphere decreases with height. Since clouds are often high in the atmosphere (about 10,000 feet), they are in air that is much colder than the earth's surface. Therefore, the rule of thumb is: the brighter the cloud in an infrared image, the higher the cloud. Colder objects are brighter and warmer objects are darker.

২) Visible satellite imagery are like a photograph, they are dependent on visible light (brought by the sun). As a result, visible satellite pictures only work during daylight hours. This is the greatest drawback to using visible imagery.
