Blood is the most precious gift that anyone can give to another person — the gift of life. Any healthy adult between 18 years and 65 years of age can donate blood. The procedure is safe and relatively painless. It takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete the blood donation process. Blood donation is giving some of your blood so that it can be used to help someone else. Donated blood helps people who have lost blood in an accident or who have an illness such as cancer, anemia, sickle cell disease, or hemophilia. But some basic health conditions have to be met by donors.
Who Can:
Minimum Health Condition Rquired to Donate Blood: Your Hemoglobin level should not be low. Your blood pressure should not be low. Body temperature should be normal. You Must not be suffering from hepatitis B, hepatitis C, Syphilis, HIV/AIDS and malaria.
Who are fit, healthy and not suffering from a cold, flu or other illness at the time of donation or in the previous 7 days.
Who are generally in good health, age 17 to 65 (if it's your first time) and weigh at least 50kg (110 pounds) you can donate.
Male donors can give blood every 12 weeks. That's approximately every 3 months or 4 times in a 12 month period. Female donors can give every 16 weeks or approximately every 4 months.
Who Cannot:
Who are not feeling well the day of the blood donation.
Who have had a heart attack in the last six to twelve months.
Who have had malaria in the last three years.
Who have visited areas where malaria is found in the last year.
Women who are pregnant or have had an abortion in the last 6 weeks are temporarily deferred.
Who have received blood, plasma or other types of components in the last year.
Who have had cardiac surgery in the last year or those who have not completely recuperated from the surgery and who are taking cardiovascular medicine.
Who have been exposed to someone with hepatitis within the last year.
Who have taken antibiotics within the last 24 to 72 hours.
Who have been tattooed in the last year.
Permanently Deferred:
Who have had hepatitis at age eleven or older.
Who are at high risk of contracting the HIV virus/AIDS.
Who have received chemotherapy or radiation for the treatment of cancer.![]()
