The recent ban on Pitbulls in Montreal is so far from logicality. This law is nothing but a complete bullshit. Yes, for sure, pitbulls are not more likely to bite. Plus, they are a very strong breed when it comes to physical strength and personality.
The major problem lies when people who don't know how to handle that kind of dog are adopting them or buying them and then the dog gets out of control or has behaviour that are not properly managed so in the end the dog makes a mistake and the owner doesn't take action to correct problem behaviour. I don't believe any dog just turns and bites. I say it's not the breed, it's the stupid people. Any dog, when pushed to its limit, is capable of something we would imagine as unthinkable behavior, as they are belovedly loyal to us, their pack. We all need to understand our dog as a dog too and not just a trusted family member, to ensure bites, which pack animals often use to establish pack relationships, don't occur. It's the biggest reason dogs get "banned" as breeds.
So they shouldn't be banned but ppl should have to take a class that can teach them how to handle that particular breed so the dog doesn't pay for the humans mistake. Dogs have a language and social interaction that some people don't know how to read. Nor should we expect children or strangers to be able to read our dog. People should do their research and take training classes for any medium to large dog breed so that the dog gets the benefit of a good owner not an ignorant one. In the end the dog always pays the price not the human. Instead of destroying a dog that's bitten send it to a home with people that can help. Dogs are trained to attack by owner don't blame the dog regardless of breed. The owner is 100% at fault.
So glad I'm not in Montreal but in Edmonton. I would really like to thank our very own Edmonton Humane Society for not agreeing with that law and for caring and for being rational human beings. I don't own any dogs currently but I'm really looking forward for adopting a Pitbull from Montreal. Please try to help these dogs so they aren't put to sleep for no good reason. It truly makes my heart hurt to think these poor innocent dogs are being discriminated against by uneducated ignorant humans. It reeks of ignorance! Man's best shows fear, trepidation and so many other things, we just need to learn the signs. I believe incidents between people and dogs could be greatly reduced with a bit of education for all dog owners. YEG with Pitbulls!
