Why we commit/ embrace immoral acts/ thoughts?
To pursue this question I would to under take a post-mortem work on Quran 12:53 and 07:20.
وَمَا أُبَرِّئُ نَفْسِي إِنَّ النَّفْسَ لَأَمَّارَةٌ بِالسُّوءِ إِلَّا مَا رَحِمَ رَبِّي إِنَّ رَبِّي غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ
(12:53) Yet I am not holding my soul to be immune from sin, for the soul incites to evil, except of the one on whom my Lord shows mercy. Indeed my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.
فَوَسْوَسَ لَهُمَا الشَّيْطَانُ لِيُبْدِيَ لَهُمَا مَا وُورِيَ عَنْهُمَا مِنْ سَوْآَتِهِمَا وَقَالَ مَا نَهَاكُمَا رَبُّكُمَا عَنْ هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةِ إِلَّا أَنْ تَكُونَا مَلَكَيْنِ أَوْ تَكُونَا مِنَ الْخَالِدِينَ ﴿7:20﴾
(7:20) But Satan made an evil suggestion to both of them that he might reveal to them their shame that had remained hidden from them. He said: 'Your Lord has forbidden you to approach this tree only to prevent you from becoming angels or immortals.
In relation to our research, DNA of Quran 12:53 is “ the soul incites to evil” and “Lord shows mercy” and Quran 07:20’s DNA is “an evil suggestion by Devil”
Having read above two of them, it can be vivid that we are naturally tends to evil – immoral acts or thoughts or feelings or Devil grieves us towards them or vice versa.
When we follow our soul or Devil’s path we go to astray. Because when Devil disobeyed Allah he went astray.
قَالَ فَاهْبِطْ مِنْهَا فَمَا يَكُونُ لَكَ أَنْ تَتَكَبَّرَ فِيهَا فَاخْرُجْ إِنَّكَ مِنَ الصَّاغِرِينَ ﴿7:13﴾
(7:13) Allah said: 'Then get you down from here. It does not behove you to be arrogant here. So be gone. You will be among the humiliated.
قَالَ فَبِمَا أَغْوَيْتَنِي لَأَقْعُدَنَّ لَهُمْ صِرَاطَكَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ ﴿7:16﴾
(7:16) Satan said: 'Since You have led me astray, I shall surely sit in ambush for them on Your Straight Path.
ثُمَّ لَآَتِيَنَّهُمْ مِنْ بَيْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ وَعَنْ أَيْمَانِهِمْ وَعَنْ شَمَائِلِهِمْ وَلَا تَجِدُ أَكْثَرَهُمْ شَاكِرِينَ ﴿7:17﴾
(7:17) Then I will come upon them from the front and from the rear, and from their right and from their left. And You will not find most of them thankful.'
If we consider this verse, we can see when Devil disobeyed Allah’s word thereafter he actually became a disobedient of Allah.
As he is not a follower of Allah’s word or not being obedient to Allah then Allah led him astray (Quran 7:16; below). Therefore he took it as a challenge to misguide believers of Allah and making themselves follower of him instead of Allah. Following verses evidence, read as:
Basically Devil vowed to divert believers of Allah. It was his promise or plane as far as above verses are concerned.
Why we follow Devil’s path during Ramadan?
As far as Hadith is concerned – “Devil is chained in Ramadan”. Allah knows better after all that how they are chained during Ramadan. We can only presume some –
1. Only those people would be protected from Devil who are fasting. Here condition could be ‘fasting’. As our soul always incites to evil (Quran 12:53).
2. Or perhaps less harmful Devils are chained/controlled by Allah hence crimes take place less in our society during Ramadan. It is difficult to stick at this point because Iblis (Devil) sought free life until hereafter. As read:
قَالَ أَنْظِرْنِي إِلَى يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ ﴿7:14﴾
(7:14) Satan replied: 'Give me respite till the Day they shall be raised.'
قَالَ إِنَّكَ مِنَ الْمُنْظَرِينَ ﴿7:15﴾
(7:15) Allah said: 'You are granted respite.
3. So if Iblis is chained in Ramadan it is difficult to conclude by us. Allah knows best.
4. Or who are addicted they may continue throughout Ramadan out of their addiction.
5. Or we might be grieved by human and jin as Allah said to seek refuge from them
مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ ﴿114:6﴾
(114:6) whether he be from the jinn or humans.
Allah knows best what actually be the case during Ramadan.
Mere disobedience to Allah makes us Disbeliever or Transgressor?
To come to a right decision we need to consider below two verse.
وَإِذْ قُلْنَا لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ اسْجُدُوا لِآَدَمَ فَسَجَدُوا إِلَّا إِبْلِيسَ أَبَى وَاسْتَكْبَرَ وَكَانَ مِنَ الْكَافِرِينَ ﴿2:34﴾
(2:34) Then We commanded the angels, "Bow yourselves to Adam. "All bowed but Iblis refused to do so; he waxed proud and joined the defiers.
In here Allah used “defiers” word - disbeliever of Allah. But compare when below verse when Adam infringed Allah’s word.
وَقُلْنَا يَا آَدَمُ اسْكُنْ أَنْتَ وَزَوْجُكَ الْجَنَّةَ وَكُلَا مِنْهَا رَغَدًا حَيْثُ شِئْتُمَا وَلَا تَقْرَبَا هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةَ فَتَكُونَا مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ ﴿2:35﴾
(2:35) Then We said, "O Adam, you and your wife, both dwell in the Garden and eat to your hearts' content where from you will, but do not go near this tree; otherwise you shall become transgressors"
Here Allah uses the word julm - transgress.
Mumin does not embrace any sin out of 100% intention. Of course this percentage fluctuate and therefore they come back to Allah again and again out of their transgression (Julm upon themselves) and indeed Allah forgives them. Because they don’t do (kufar) disbelieve Allah’s word to obey. They are merely misguided by Devil or because of the influence of “nafse lawwamah”
وَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِالنَّفْسِ اللَّوَّامَةِ ﴿75:2﴾
(75:2) and nay, I swear by the self-reproaching soul!
and commit sin or become disobedient to Allah for a while and then they come back and of course they come to Allah for being forgiven by Him.
وَهُوَ الَّذِي يَقْبَلُ التَّوْبَةَ عَنْ عِبَادِهِ وَيَعْفُو عَنِ السَّيِّئَاتِ وَيَعْلَمُ مَا تَفْعَلُونَ ﴿42:25﴾
(42:25) He it is Who accepts repentance from His servants and forgives sins and knows all what you do
Quran mentioned so far three kinds of souls –
(1) Nasfe Ammarah – discussed above,
(2) Nafse Lawamah – Discussed above which one always fluctuate
(3) Nafse Mutmainnah – will be discussed whilst purification ways will be furnished below.
