ইংরেজী বাক্যে সংখ্যা লিখার নীতি

কাজের সুত্রে অন্যের লিখা রিসার্চ প্রোপোজাল পড়তে হয় এবং নিজেকেও লিখতে হয় কিন্তু সমস্যা হয় বাক্যের মধ্যে সংখ্যা লিখার বিভিন্ন নীতি দেখে... কোন কনসিসটেন্সী দেখি না তাই নিজেও কনফিউজড থাকি লিখার সময়... তারই ফলাফল এই পোস্ট:



- কখনই সংখ্যা দিয়ে বাক্য আরম্ভ করা উচিত না। উদাহরন

72 centimeters tall person না লিখে লিখা উচিত Seventy-two centimeters tall person

Exception: dates can be written in the beginning of the sentence (2014 was a bad year for him)



- দুই শব্দের সংখ্যাকে বানান না করে সংখ্যা হিসাবেই লিখা উচিত ৩১, ৪৫ কিন্তু এক থেকে নয় পর্যন্ত্য কে বানান করেই লিখা উচিত (বিশেষত যখন সংখ্যাটা কোন নাউন কে মডিফাই করে। উদাহরন: two students, five teachers not 2 students or 5 teachers.



- কিন্তু সংখ্যা যখন কোন ইউনিট অফ মেজারমেন্ট, সময়, proportionকে মডিফাই করে, তখন বানান না করে সংখ্যা হিসাবেই লিখা উচিত: example: 5 inches, 15-minute delay, 75 mph, 23 years old, page 23, 12 percent.



- সংখ্যার পরে একটা হাইফেন দিতে হবে যদি কোন ইউনিট অফ মেজারমেন্ট কোন নাউনকে মডিফাই করে। Example: 10-foot tall; 6-inch ruler; 5-year-old boy (the unit of measurement will always be singular never plural. It can't be 6-inches ruler)



- ডেসিমেল ও ফ্রাকশান সব সময় সংখ্যা দিয়ে লিখতে হবে: Example: 0.75; 1/4 oz; 14 in. (remember, the abbreviations of the measurements (oz; in) are always in singular form)

- পারসেন্টইজ এক্সপ্রেশন সবসময় বানান করে লিখা উচিত: last semester seventy five percent of the students failed the test (not 75%)

- running numbers কনফিউশন দুর করার জন্য, একটা কে বানান করে আরেকটা কে সংখ্যা হিসাবে লিখা উচিত (বড় সংখ্যাকে বানান করা উচিত) example: She has 25 fifth-grade students; Here are 10 four-foot long sticks; We need five 100-watt bulbs

- নিচের কয়েকটি ক্ষেত্রে সব সময় সংখ্যা ব্যবহার করা উচিত

তারিখ (January 17, 2001); খেলার স্কোর; ঠিকানা; টাকা ($75,000 - you can omit the comma when writing in thousands like $7500); ranges (between 15 and 20); এবং সময় (10.15 a.m.)

If use o'clock and you round up time then you can spell the time- example: seven o'clock; use a.m. or p.m. not AM or PM)

- লিস্ট করার নিয়ম: বাক্যের ভিতর লিস্ট করার সময়

I have three items to discuss: (1) the first item; (2) the second item; and (3) the third item. (remember the parenthesis around the number; semicolons; and the 'and' before the last number)



ভার্টিক্যালি লিস্ট করার সময়:

কনটেক্সট বুঝে লিখা উচিত

3. the third list



যদি লিস্ট কমপ্লিট বাক্য থাকে, তাহলে সেমিকোলন দিয়ে শেষ করা উচিত আর সবার শেষে ফুল স্টপ দিতে হবে:

1. Pray for the poor people;

2. Pray for the sick people;

3. Pray for the old people;

4. Pray for the neighbors. ( note no 'and' after the next to last item). Use of capitalization depends on

the context as well.

- Do not use ordinals in dates: January 14, not 14th
