The long tentacles of coaching business...

When the system of Primary School Certificate (PSC) and Junior School Certificate (JSC) examinations were introduced in the country, they sparked enthusiasm among both students and parents. The idea was novel in the country. Like the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations, those two were viewed as something adding to the students' educational value. School teacher and guardians were found talking extra care of the prospective students. Although, better grades in the exams did not carry much academic value, those meant a lot to the institutions concerned.

According to them, many schools in the country are now engaged in coaching business on the pretext of taking extra classes for the exams. The parents view these classes as something taking quite a toll on them, financially. These special classes are held before and after the school hours. As could be feared, these coaching courses will eventually turn out to be a big economic burden for parents. Many of them have even pointed out the futility of these school level certificate exams.

It's the government that introduced the PSC and JSC exams in 2009 and 2011. Likewise, hindrances created in their way will also have to be removed by them. The problem, however, lies with the so-called coaching system. It has been eating away at the vitals of the country's education for decades.

In the cities, especially Dhaka, there are no school and college final examinations nowadays that have not been targeted by the coaching centres. Even the public universities and specialized colleges can not escape their net. Apart from importing public exams coaching, these centres 'ensure' admission to renowned universities and medical courses. Most of the students enrolling with them end up being deceived, as they do not qualify in the admission tests. Meantime, the helpless parents have to part with huge sums of money. The whole amount slips into the pockets of these crash-course and made-easy coaching centres.
