There are a lot of attention in the small business arena given to lead generation techniques. There are conferences, trade shows, webinars, seminars, ebooks, trade magazines, websites and more all dedicated to answering the question: How do I get new customers? Along with your other marketing methods, which should include referrals, you should consider using a targeted mailing list. So what is a targeted mailing list?



An affordable mailing list can be targeted to identify your ideal clients. For example, if you are looking to sell solar panels you probably don’t need a list of renters, so you can target homeowners. To take that a step further, you can target the homeowners by home value. Owners of smaller homes probably won’t have as much of a need for a product like that, especially if they have a low energy usage and may have limited means, but if you target homes with higher market values you can find your ideal prospects. Of course not everyone one of them will be waiting with baited breath to buy, but it will help save you a great deal of time because you won’t have to be spending time and resources marketing to folks that are less likely to be purchasing your product.



Targeted lists don’t just have to be for mailing, you can purchase affordable cold calling lists too. These can be sliced and diced the same way that the targeted mailing lists can, but they will need to be scrubbed against the national do-not-call registry. This will greatly limit the amount of leads available because the majority of customers in the United States are registered with the DNC (approximately 70%), but it is a much more direct approach. It may take a bit more time than direct mail, but it let’s you actually engage in a conversation with the prospect vs waiting passively for them to respond to your mailer.
