Islamic Manners/etiquette (Islamic Adab)

Islam is not religion full of prayers and rituals only; islam is a complete code of life that teachs and emphacsize on spritual,personal,famillial and social pattern of behavior and interaction as well. These are called ADAB or Manners. In addition, there are Adab or manners are all-inclusive, covers the life of muslim from birth to death. This is islamic culture which is distinct from other cultures (religions, social, familial or national culture of country). Islamic culture (adab) give the muslim a distinct identity in all affairs of life,as muslims,we should feel proud of our islamic culture.

The quran and authentic hadith of our beloved prophet muhammad  (blessing and peace be upon him) have given the muslim details of the adab encompessing all aspects of life. A muslim who practices adab with sincerity on a daily life, is loved by allah. On the other hand a muslim who neglects of these manners will tend to drift away from islam and become a person far a way from the grace of allah. This is termendous loss let us now see the nature of the adab ( Manners) that we should practice:

v   When the name of allah is cited, say: Subhana wa ta’ala ( Allah is holy, he is great)

v  When the name of prphet Muhammad is spoken or heard, say sallallahu alaihe wa sallam

( Allah’s blessing and peace be upon him)

v  When the name of any other prophet is spoken or heard say; alaihes salam (allah peace be upon him)

v  When the name of sahabi ( companion)  of prophet muhammad is spoken or heard, say radiallahu anhu.

v  In case of female companion (sahabia) say: radiallahu anha.

v  While starting any activity, say; Bismillah ( i am beginning it in the name of Allah).

v  While entering your own house or apartment, say: Bismillah.

v  When good news is heard or gratitued to allah is to be expressed for any reason, say Alhamdulillah ( all praises belong to allah alone)

v  When someone departs from you; say Fi- Amanillah ( i place you to the safety and protection of allah)

v  When something strange is heard, say; Subhanallah (allah is holy,allah is great)

v  To express gratitude to anyone for something good/nice done to you, say; Jazakallah khairan (May allah great you better rewards)

v  When entangled in a problem,say; tawakkalullah ( i depend upon allah).

v  When sleep is broken in the morning say; Lailah illallah.( there is none to be worshipped except allah)

v  While sneezing, say; Alhamdulillah (All praises belong to Allah alone)

v  For the answer Alhamdulillah,say yarhamukallah (may allah have marcy upon you)

v  While in pain, say; ya allah

v  For any promise for intending to do anything in future say; insha allah (if Allah wishes)

v  If any objetionable thing is done or you come across any obsence/heatful thing or hear hateful/obsance news, say Astag Firullah(o Allah! I seek your paradon)

v  While expressing hate for anything say; Nauzubillah (i seek Allah’s shelter)

v  When death news of a muslim (Male or female) is heard say; Inna Lillahi wa inna ilahi raje’un (we are for allah and we will returne to him)

v  Not to sever connection with blood relation, To fulfill the obligations due to the relations.

v  (a) To maintain good personal character; (b) never to break a trust, (c) never to misappropriate (embezzle) other’s money or property; (D) Never to Break a contract/promise.

v  (a) to behave politely with other’s; (b) to treat others or decide matters with justice (insaaf); (c) to pay repay whatever is due to others on time.

v  (a) To maintain personal hygiene and cleanlinees 24/7; (b) to keep own surroundings neat and clean, free from dirt and bad smell all the time; (c) to put on clean and odor–free dress;(e) to brush teeth regularly; (f) to use perfume (fragrance)

v  To help the poor (relative and others), orphans, sick, women and children,wayfarers etc. Not to rebuke a  person asking for help.

v  To take best care of the parrants, listen to thier orders,Never to misbehave with them, show them due respect in all matters, Make the comfortable in all respect. Children disobedient to thier parents cannot      

v  To take care of near relation and neighbors,help them when asked for.

v  To have patience and depend on allah (tawakkaul) on all metters.

v  To respect the elders, love the children, to give service to the old people and the sick.

v  To use the right hand while giving something to and taking something from others.

v  To use the left hand for cleaning after using the toilet,Not to pee standing,Not to do toilet facing qibla.

v  To answer a question with smile.

v  To accept a gift with smile and; say ‘’Thank you’’ to give gift to others, Exchange of gift increase love and affection among all.

v  To behave well with others; never to be arrogant.

v  To control anger. Not to scream at others.

v  To accept an invitation,thank that person, in case of inability to accept the invitation, refuse it politely with thanks stating the reason for your inability.

v  Not to put anybody to shame; Not to harm anybody wilfully; Not to wish bad for others, not to use abusive language with anybody; not to seek for faults and spread bad names of others.

v  To behave nicely with the guests and take good care of them.

v  Not to wear vulgar dress.women, girls to wear hijaab all over the body, Not only tie a scarf around the head because that’s not the real hijaab.

v  Women should not use perfume while going out of home because fragrance attracts men to them; at the same time, bad odor too should not come from body and dress.

v  To do good work and encourage others to do so.

v  To lead a simple life free from extravagance; to adopta middle course in all matters avoiding extreams, to maintain a happy appearnce and attitude. Such life style will encourage others to change for better.

v  To shun pride greed miserliness and extravagence. Not to waste money (wealth) or time.Allah does not like an extravagantor wasteful person.

v  To repay loan on time. Not to borrow paying interest. Interest is Haram.

v  Not to speak  ill of other religions or their adherents. Tolerance is always recommended.

v  Not to eat or drink anything in standing position, always to do so sitting.

v  To put forward the right fool first while entering a mosque and put forward the left foot first while leaving the mosque.

v  While wearing socks and shoes, start with the right foot first and then the left foot.

v  While wearing dress,start from the right side first and then the left side.

v  To take food or drink by the right hand and saying Bismillah first.Drinking water in standing position in not recommended.

v  Never waste any food or drink.

v  To shave the unwanted hair of underarms and of the public area regularly within 40 days. this is a part of personal hygiene strongly emphasized in the hadith.

v  To trim the nails of hands and toes regularly. As well, males should get thier hair cut nicely on a regular basis.

v  To wash hands and face and get refreshed soon after returning  home from outside.making Wudu is preferable. Make a habit of remaining in the state of Wudu all day long.

v  While inside a mosque,place your shoes neatly on show rack.it is praiseworthy if you place other’s shoes as well on the show rack neatly.

v  During winter season hang your jackets neatly on the hangers provided therein.

v  Put garbage inside the correct bins.

v  Don’t waste water or splash water around while making Wudu. Wipearound the sink after wudu with a papar towel.wipe the wet floor too leave it dry.

v  Never criticize or show contempt to others.Never to judge a person on the basis of his wealth or poverty.Never to call names of others.

v  Never to understimate any person without knowing him well. Never to to from a nagative opinion about any person on the basis of others advers report before verfying the truth.

v  Not to take hasty dicision without proper verification of the relevant facts and figures.not to pry into other’s property.



So far we have discussed about islamic Manners, mathiculous practicing of which will build the fabric of our life on earth for enjoing bliss in the life after death. Now let us turn our attaintion to some other verry important and activities essential for leading an idia islamic life.
