The world's highest motorable pass?

Khardung La is widely, but incorrectly, believed to be the highest vehicle-accessible pass in the world. A well-graded Indian military road (visible on 2011 imagery on visual globe systems such as Google Earth) reaches 5,610 metres (18,406 ft) 250 meters west of the 5,545 metres (18,192 ft) Mana Pass on the India - Tibet border. It connects with an equally well-constructed, slightly lower Chinese military road based on SRTM data at posting intervals of 30 meters. There are also higher motorable passes at Suge La, west of Lhasa, 5,430 m (17,815 feet), and Semo La 5,565 m (18,258 feet), between Raka and Coqen in Central Tibet. Both these elevations are supported by GPS and SRTM evidence and the latter was also measured by the Catalans and supported by the Cartographic Institute of Catalonia. Vehicles have been driven over the 5,582 metres (18,314 ft) Marsimik La, in the Indian Karakoram to the north-east of Khardung La, but it is debatable whether this pass should be considered to be motorable.

সাইবার অভিযত্রী বলেছেন: Khardung La (Khardung Pass, la means pass in Tibetan) is a high mountain pass located in Ladakh region of the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The local pronunciation is "Khardong La" or "Khardzong La," but, as with most names in Ladakh, the romanised spelling varies.
The pass on the Ladakh Range lies north of Leh and is the gateway to the Shyok and Nubra valleys. The Siachen Glacier lies partway up the latter valley. Built in 1976, it was opened to motor vehicles in 1988 and has since seen many automobile, motorbike and mountain biking expeditions. Maintained by the Border Roads Organisation, the pass is strategically important to India as it is used to carry supplies to the Siachen Glacier.
Local summit signs claim that its elevation is 5,602 m (18,379 ft) metres high and that it is the world's highest motorable pass. But these claims are disputed by multiple modern measurements, which all agree that its true height is much nearer to the 5,359 m (17,582 ft) measured using DGPS and imply that there are several higher motorable passes.
Khardong La is historically important as it lies on the major caravan route from Leh to Kashgar in Central Asia. About 10,000 horses and camels used to take the route annually, and a small population of Bactrian camels can still be seen at Hunder, in the area north of the pass. During World War II there was an attempt to transfer war material to China through this route.

সাইবার অভিযত্রী বলেছেন: Location :
Khardung La is situated 39 km by road from Leh. The first 24 km, as far as the South Pullu check point, are paved. From there to the North Pullu check point about 15 km beyond the pass the roadway is primarily loose rock, dirt, and occasional rivulets of snow melt. However, this pass is in better repair than many of the surrounding passes (Tanglang La, for example). From North Pullu into the Nubra Valley, the road is very well maintained (except in a very few places where washouts or falling rock occur). Hired vehicles (2 and 4-wheel-drive), heavy trucks, and motorcycles regularly travel into the Nubra Valley, though special permits may need to be arranged for travellers to make the journey.

Elevation:
The claimed 18380 feet signboard on top. Multiple modern measurements agree that the actual elevation is several hundred feet lower and that the superlative claim is incorrect.
The 5,359 m (17,582 ft) elevation measure was taken from a modern GPS survey by a team of researchers. It accurately matches SRTM data, ASTER GDEM data and Russian topographic mapping, and it is broadly consistent with several other independent travellers' GPS reports and an article by Bonington.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mana Pass is located in Tibetan Plateau

Location of the Pass
Elevation 5,545 m (18,192 ft): (SRTM2)
Location India and Tibet
Range Himalayas
Coordinates 31°04′06″N 79°25′00″E

Mana Pass (el. 5,545 m (18,192 ft)), alternatively Māna La, Chirbitya, Chirbitya-la, or Dungri La,[1] is a mountain pass in the Himalayas on the border between India and Tibet. It appears to now be the highest vehicle-accessible pass in the world, containing a road constructed in the 2005-2010 period for the Indian military by the Border Roads Organisation and visible on 2011 imagery on visual globe systems such as Google Earth. The well-graded gravel-dirt road is higher on the Indian side than the new road on the Tibetan side, and rises to 5,610 metres (18,406 ft) on the Indian side of the border, 250m west of the low point of the 5,545 metres (18,192 ft) Mana Pass

সাইবার অভিযত্রী বলেছেন: Geography :

Mana Pass is located within the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve, 24 km north of the town of Mana, India and 27 km north of the Hindu pilgrimage town of Badrinath in Uttarakhand. It is the source of the Saraswati River, the longest stem of one of the longest Ganges tributaries, the Alaknanda River.[2] That river trickles through several scenic small ponds between the pass and Lake Deo Tal three km southwest of the pass. Mana pass is also the key col for climbing Chaukhamba peak.
Mana as a name derives from "Manibhadra Ashram", the ancient name of the town of Mana.

History :

Mana Pass was an ancient trade route between Uttarakhand and Tibet. Mana Pass led from Badrinath to the kingdom, now province, of Guge in Tibet. The Portuguese Jesuits António de Andrade and Manuel Marques became the first known Europeans to enter Tibet across Mana Pass in 1624. The pass continued as a minor trade route until its closure in 1951 by the Chinese. On April 29, 1954, China and India signed an agreement granting pilgrims and indigenous travelers the right to travel between the two countries through Mana Pass.

Access:

The pass is reached from the south by an extension of National Highway 58 (NH58) that connects Delhi with Badrinath, though beyond Badrinath the graded road is subject to landslides. A group of motorcycle riders from Free Souls Rider apparently became the first non - military vehicles reach Mana Pass.

Coordinates 34°05′36″N 78°37′06″E

Marsimik La or Marsimek La, elevation 5,681.5meters(18,640 ft), is a high mountain pass in the Chang-Chemno Range in northern India about 100 km (62 mi) east of Leh, further by road.
Located 20 km (10 mi) northeast of the northwest tip of Pangong Lake, the pass is on the shortest route from there to the contested Kongka Pass area some 42 km (26 mi) further northeast on the China-India line of actual control. Marsimik La is 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) west of the sharp 6,000 to 6,500 m (19,700 to 21,300 ft) ridgeline forming the line of actual control.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Semo La is located in China

Elevation 5,565 m (18,258 ft)
Location China
Coordinates 30°06′36″N 85°25′54″E

Semo La (La means "pass" in Tibetan) is a mountain pass situated in the central part of Tibet and gives access to the Chang Tang region. It is found on the so-called Northern Route, north of Raka and south of Coqen in Central Tibet. Travellers use this route as an alternative access route to western Tibet and Mount Kailash, especially when mud makes access by the more southern route difficult.[citation needed]
The road crossing the pass is an old unsurfaced track travelled only by a weekly bus and trucks heading west to avoid the boggy parts of the south of the country.
At 5,565 metres (18,258 ft), Semo La may be the highest vehicle-accessible pass in the world. It is the highest that has been measured accurately. Khardung La, up to now thought to be the world record holder at 5,602 metres (18,379 ft), in reality, according to modern surveys, measures 5,359 m (17,582 ft), 243 m (797 ft) less than previously thought. There are other passes that may be higher but have yet to be surveyed properly and may not reasonably be considered "motorable"

Elevation
The height of 5,565 m (18,258 ft) was calculated in 2005 by a team of researchers conducting a modern GPS survey. It accurately matches NASA SRTM data and is consistent with GPS measurements shown here.

সাইবার অভিযত্রী বলেছেন: Suge La: High Pass in Tibet

There is always a lot of debate over labeling something as the "highest in the world". It seems like no one can agree on things like the "highest lake" or the "highest motorable road". There was even debate almost until the mid-20th century over which mountain was the highest in the world. I have had people tell me that Lake Titicaca in South America is the highest lake in the world at 3812m. There are literally hundreds of lakes on the Tibetan Plateau that are clearly higher than Titicaca. Nam Tso is just one example at 4718m and Nam Tso is not even the highest lake in Tibet. People will then debate over what defines a lake...how big does a pool of water have to be to be considered a lake? Another topic of debate is the highest motorable road in the world. The Khardung La in Ladakh claims to be the highest motorable road in the world at 5602m, but has recently been measured and confirmed at 5359m, 243m lower than the sign at the pass states.

The Suge La is not the highest motorable pass in the world, but it is definitely one of the highest. It is the highest motorable road that I have been on. The Suge La rises to 5430m / 17,815 feet above sea level. The pass is located in the Nyenchen Dangla Mountains about 110kms northwest of Lhasa. From the pass, you get an amazing view of Chomo Gangtse, which rises to 7048m. The road conditions at the Suge La are decent. It is a wide dirt road that most vehicles can travel on.

While it is of course debatable, the highest motorable road in the world probably is Semo La, which rises to a confirmed 5565m. It depends however, on your definition of "motorable road". This Semo La is located in Tsochen county in Ngari Prefecture (far west Tibet).
