Every day millions of people where we work wake up to find themselves trapped in another day of poverty. For many this is made worse by isolation, disability and discrimination within society and even in law.



LEPRA is a charity that works with people who find themselves in these situations every day. With the support of people like you we find ways to bridge the gaps in health care and fight the physical and socio-economic barriers that leave people vulnerable to disease, disability and discrimination.



Together we transform lives by giving people a chance to break the cycle of ill health, isolation and poverty.



LEPRA Health in Action works to treat, educate and support people in some of the world’s most deprived communities. Originally formed in 1924 with the aim “to rid the British Empire of leprosy” we have built on our extensive experience to address not only prevention and treatment of leprosy, but also other diseases of poverty including lymphatic filariasis, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and malaria. In order to do this we need to continue to increase the availability of health care and improve its quality.



During the course of our work we are called upon not only to directly treat patients but also to work with governments and community organisations on new programmes, as well as to strengthen and improve networks and infrastructure for health that are already in place.



Apart from the medical aspects of disease we also have to deal with the social and psychological effects. We hear heart rending stories of families torn apart, rejection and exclusion because of the myths and fears that surround disease. We can counteract this of course through our programmes of education within communities but these are long term activities as deeply held beliefs are sometimes hard to overcome.

Our projects fighting diseases of poverty



Building on more than 85 years of experience as the key pioneering organisation combating leprosy, we now address not only leprosy prevention and treatment, but also other diseases of poverty including malaria, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and lymphatic filariasis. We believe that there is little point in someone being cured of leprosy if they are then to die of another treatable or preventable disease.



Through our provision of health education in communities, training local staff, setting up specialist referral services and refurbishing hospitals and surgeries, LEPRA is working alongside vulnerable communities to help put people’s health in their own hands.
