The television media in Bangladesh is popular, influential and has the potential to give voice to the masses, which is vital for a nascent democracy and good governance. However, the commercialization and influence of ownership of TV media may undercut the independence and objectivity of the media; thereby affect the credibility of TV news. Given the unprecedented expansion of TV media industry in Bangladesh, research regarding the credibility of TV news in Bangladesh has not been conducted to date. Based upon a survey within Dhaka City Corporation, this study explores the factors that explain credibility of TV news. Six factors were hypothesized to examine the perception of audience from all walks of life. Using factor analysis and multiple regressions, five of the six factors were found to have a significant effect on perceptions of credibility of TV news. These include objectivity of TV news, social role of TV news, regular update of news, independence of news, and presenting truthful account of events in the TV news. Policy implications are discussed in view of the findings. The research outcomes of this study shades light upon several factors, which should be considered by the TV channels for developing the state of TV news credibility, so that media can play its expected role on advancing the democracy.

At the initial stage political and capital centric news got the main focus. Whereas local news gets a little focus. Straight jacket news and verbose style of news got main focus and they are going ahead with this trend. We can see this trend is going on still now.

In this research we tried to analyze the news in quantitative and qualitative method. In the research period we tried to count the rate of political, economic, sports, crime, cultural and development based news. Besides I also tried to analyze informative, investigative as well as straight jacket news quantitatively and qualitatively.

It hurt me very much that still now local news is getting less importance in TV news. That’s why I focused very much to find out the percentage of local news and what is the real situation of marginal people in our news base media.
Objectives

# “Analysis of local news of the renowned three TV channels namely Somoy TV, Independent, and Ekattor”- this title of this research tells us the objectives of this research. It is imperative to have a good knowledge on news content as a student of MCJ. It works as one of the main driving force of this research.

# Here we will try to find out how these three channels allocate their time according to types of news, duration of news.

# To assess the frequency of local news in these channels.

# To assess whether this local news was investigative or straight jacket or others.

# To find out, Is there have any kind of inconsistency between the news script and visual?

Research Methodology

It is very important to find out the appropriate methodology to conduct a research. I followed a definite methodology to conduct this research. At the very beginning of this research I have tried to get a overall consumption about the contents.
It’s a content analysis based research. In this research I present quantitative analysis at the beginning and then in-depth qualitative analysis. In quantitative analysis I classified the news structurally as well as contextually. After that on the basis of this output I analyzed it quantitatively. To find out the inconsistency of script and visual I took help from video clips.
Limitations

To accomplish this research I had to face various limitations. But the fixed time frame of taking sample was not enough to predict overall situation. It was not the only task, besides this I had to spent time for class tests, others assignment as well as daily classes. That’s why the scarcity of time is one of the main bottlenecks of this research.

Budget was also hindrance a lot.

Having these limitations I tried my best to present it very perfectly.

Television as a news medium

News takes the driving seat despite having so many other entertaining programs. Because Television has the only power to present news to the audience on spot. Audience deemed themselves as they are in news spot where they can see the key persons of the news as television broadcast commentary with visual. Credibility, immediacy and observations are highly maintained in televisions news. It fulfills audience lust to know the real fact what is happening in their surroundings and that’s why they keep attachment with TV news rather than other programmers.
For instance we can say the 7 murders of Narayanganj, here audiences can involve themselves what the fact is going on and where the fact took place. It’s the uniqueness of television’s news.

Besides this television news can reach both literate and illiterate person. “to enjoy television program there is no need to literacy, no need to go outside and there age is not a fact” (Nasrin.1999:20)

Definition of Local News
In journalism, local news refers to news coverage of events in a local context which would not normally be of interest to those of other localities, or otherwise be of national or international scope. Opt-outs of local television news are frequent during, before or after national evening news television programming.
Local news largely covers the following:
• local sports
• local crime and justice
• local weather
• local business and economy
• local events
• local education
• local politics
National and international news, however, tend to cover a wider range of content, including news concerning specialized institutions of wide-ranging international power or influence, such as:
• stock markets
• (inter)national sports competitions
• (inter)national political and intergovernmental events
• regional environmental events
• media/entertainment events
• science/technology events
• air traffic/aviatory transport events
• defense/security events





Literature Review

Now television is a great mass medium. Now it’s appeal growing day by day for its visualization, fastness, and clarity. Marshall McCluhan defined television as a visual, oral and tactile medium. News is one of the important items of televisions of its various programs. Renowned research institution CIRUS recently said that now news is most popular program of Bangladeshi channels. (Khan, 2009)

Saiful Alam Chowdhury, the assistant professor of Mass Communication and Journalism of DU recently published an article by title “TV’r Rajnoitik Sangbad and Ginipig Dorshok”. There he said that political news covers a huge area in our television news. (Chowdhury, 2010)

“TV’r Mofosshotto o sohore adhipottobad: ekjon kangal horinath er khoje” an another article of chowdhury and there he mentioned that when a small mischief occur in Dhaka city it gets huge coverage, but in rural areas robbery is happening so frequently and people have to take a vigil eye to protest robbery, such kind of news never get a little time like 15 seconds in prime time bulletin. (Chowdhury, 2010)
