Alamgir was actually serving the party as its senior joint general secretary, a post he obtained in the 5th National Council of BNP in December 2009. He was named the party’s acting general secretary following the death of general secretary Khandaker Delwar Hossain in March 2011. He served as the state minister of agriculture, tourism and civil aviation between 2001 and 2006. He was a member of parliament in the same term, was elected from the northern district of Thakurgaon.
[edit] Early life
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was born on 1 August 1948 in Thakurgaon, Bangladesh. His father Mirza Ruhul Amin was a lawyer and a politician, who won as a member of parliament from Thakurgaon constituency, several times. Fakhrul studied economics in University of Dhaka, from where he obtained honors and Master's degrees.[1]
Fakhrul worked as a college professor at the beginning of his career and taught in a number of public institutions including Dhaka college.. Before finally joining politics in the late 1980s, he had held different government offices, including that of a secretary of deputy prime minister S.A. Bari until 1982.[2]
[edit] Political career
[edit] Student Politics
Alamgir was active in student politics as a student of Dhaka University. He was a member of the then East Pakistan Students Union, now known as Bangladesh Students Union, and was elected as the general secretary of the organization’s SM Hall unit in the university. Alamgir rose through ranks in EPSU and at the height of 1969 uprising against Ayub Khan administration, he got elected as the organization’s Dhaka University president.[1][2]
In 1971, Alamgir left to join the liberation war of Bangladesh against the Pakistani military junta which ended in 16 December leaving millions of Bangladeshis dead.
[edit] Teaching and Other Government Positions
In 1972 in a free Bangladesh, Alamgir took teaching as profession and joined Dhaka College to teach economics.[1]
Among other government responsibilities, Alamgir worked for the Bangladesh government’s Directorate of Inspection and Audit as an auditor.[2]
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir served in the administration of President of Bangladesh Ziaur Rahman. He worked as a secretary of the deputy prime minister S.A. Bari until the latter resigned in 1982. Following this Alamgir went back to teaching and taught economics in Thakurgaon Government College, where he taught until 1986 before finally joining active politics.[1][2]
[edit] Enter to Politics
1986 with the municipal polls ahead, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir resigned from his government post and joined active politics. He campaigned to fight for the post of chairman in Thakurgaon municipality in 1988 municipal elections, and won.[1][2]
Alamgir joined BNP amid the countrywide uprising to topple the military regime of Gen Hussain Muhammad Ershad in early 1990s. In 1992, Alamgir was nominated as president of the BNP’s Thakurgaon district unit.[1][2]
[edit] Member of Parliament and State Minister
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir fought in the 5th parliamentary election in 1991 from Thakurgaon-1 constituency with BNP ticket but lost to Awami League candidate Khademul Islam.[3] He lost to the same candidate again in 7th parliamentary election in 1996, but this time with a very narrow margin, garnering over 47 per cent votes against his victor’s 51 per cent.[4]
Alamgir’s breakthrough to become an MP came in 8th parliamentary election in 2001 where he, as a BNP candidate, beat Awami League candidate Ramesh Chandra Sen by 37,962 votes, garnering 134,910 votes.[1][2][5]
The newly formed government, by Alamgir’s party BNP, included Alamgir in its cabinet and gave him charge of the ministry of agriculture, where he served as a state minister. Later a cabinet reshuffle put him in charge of the ministry of tourism and civil aviation, where he served until the BNP government left office in October 2006 for the caretaker government.[1][2]
Mirza Alamgir retained the party ticket in Thakurgaon-1 constituency and fought in the 9th parliamentary election in 2008, in which he marginally lost to the Awami League backed aspirant Ramesh Chandra Sen.[6]
[edit] 5th BNP Council
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was one of the party leaders expected to get high positions in the 5th National Council of BNP in December 2008. The council named him the senior joint general secretary, a post previously held by Tarique Rahman, now a vice-chairman.[7]
Alamgir following the party council became a household name in Bangladesh for his frequent appearance before media as the party’s spokesperson, particularly as vocal opposition leader of the Awami League-led government that took office in January 2009.
[edit] BNP’s Acting General Secretary
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was named the acting general secretary of BNP by its chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia following death of general secretary Khandaker Delwar Hossain in March 2011.[8]
Few senior BNP figures disputed the ‘in-charge’ status of position stating that BNP constitution does not accommodate such rules. The dispute was ruled out after Begum Khaleda Zia declared Alamgir to be in the post on 21 March 2011, hours before she left for Saudi Arabia at invitation of the royal family.[8][9][10]
While serving in the post of acting general secretary, Alamgir was found to keep criticizing the government vibrantly on different issues. Upon organizing mass anti-government showdowns, he warned the government to not obstruct the opposition events.[11][12][13]
During the time Alamgir kept serving as the party’s organizing chief, the party went for a number of countrywide populous showdowns and agitations against the government, most notably on the issues of caretaker government provision which the Awami League government demolished enforcing its decisive two-third majority in the parliament in 2011.[14]
His motorcade came under a violent attack by armed mob in Lakshmipur on 2 August 2011 as it was approaching the main town where Alamgir was about to attend a party meeting. The attackers eventually were not identified, but Alamgir and his companions alleged them belonging to the ruling party Awami League. Though Alamgir was unhurt, three vehicles including the one he was riding was vandalized and ten people got injured.[15]
Mirza Fakhrul Islam in February 2012 criticized the government for its role amid the Pilkhana massacre.[16] He termed the violence to be a bid to permanently damage the national security of Bangladesh and accused Awami League government of not being in the right track to minimize the damages and probing the incident to find and punish the culprits.[17]
As of March 2012, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stands as one of the top contenders to fill the post of BNP’s general secretary.[18]
[edit] Personal life
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir is married with Rahat Ara Begum. Rahat attended University of Calcutta and presently works in an insurance company in Dhaka. The couple has two daughters, Mirza Shamaruh and Mirza Safaruh. Shamaruh attended University of Dhaka and was a teacher in the institution. She is now working as a post doctoral fellow in Australia. Safaruh, also a University of Dhaka graduate, teaches in a school in Dhaka.[19]
Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s father Mirza Ruhul Amin was a lawyer and BNP politician. He was elected as an MP several times.[19]
Mirza Fakhrul’s uncle Mirza Golam Hafiz too was a BNP politician who served as the minister of land between 1978 and 1979, minister of law, justice and parliamentary affairs between 1991 and 1996 and was elected MP from a Dhaka constituency in 1979. Hafiz was the speaker of the 2nd national parliament of Bangladesh that sat between 1979 and 1982.[20] Mirza Fakhrul's another uncle Wing Commander S R Mirza was the director of Youth Camp in the Mujibnagar Government formed on 10 April 1971.
