Bangladesh met only one out of three least developed country (LDC) graduation thresholds as per the latest assessment by UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development). The country will have to meet two remaining thresholds to graduate from the present list of 48 LDCs. Bangladesh should adopt industrial policies that would enhance productive capacities and competitive strength of its economy as part of a strategy for smooth graduation from the Least LDC status. A longer term development pathway will help the country graduate on a sustainable basis from the list of 48 poor nations. The three criteria are gross national income (GNI), economic vulnerability index (EVI) and human asset index (HAI). As per UNCTAD assessment 2016, Bangladesh met the economic vulnerability index and values regarding the GNI and the HAI remained to be done. The country's per capita GNI stood at $1,465 in the last fiscal year. Bangladesh has a fairly good possibility to meet HAI criterion and perhaps the income conditions as well. If the country satisfies the requirements until 2021 there is a possibility to graduate from the LDC status in 2024. As per 2016 assessment, Bangladesh scored 63 plus on the HAI, requiring 66 to pass the criterion.
