আমাদের অনেকের মাঝেই একটা ভুল ধারনা আছে যে, বাজারে যেসব কসমেটিক পারফ্যুম বা সুগন্ধী (modern perfumes) পাওয়া যায় সে গুলোতে মাদক দ্রব্য মিশ্রিত থাকে, যে কারনে ওসব ব্যবহার করা হারাম। এই ধারনা আসলে অজ্ঞতার কারনেই হয়ে থাকে এবং প্রচলিতও আছে। হ্যাঁ, alcohol মিশ্রিত থাকে ঠিকই, তবে তা পানযোগ্য মাদক নয়। আমরা পারফ্যুমের ingredients-এ দেখতে পাবো যে অনেককিছুর মধ্যে লেখা আছে 'Alcohol Denat'। এর মানে denatured alcohol. অর্থাৎ alcohol-এর প্রাকৃতিক গুনাগুনকে বিতারিত করে যে উপাদান পাওয়া যায় তা-ই perfume-এ ব্যবহৃত হয়। তার মানে দাঁড়াচ্ছে, যে মাদক কেবল নামেই কিন্তু প্রকৃত গুনাগুন বর্জিত তা কখনো হারাম হতে পারে না। Denatured Alcohol সম্বন্ধে নিচে বিস্তারিত জেনে নেয়া যেতে পারে....



What is Denatured Alcohol?

Denatured alcohol is ethanol which has been rendered toxic or otherwise undrinkable, and in some cases dyed. It is used for purposes such as fuel for spirit burners and camping stoves, and as a solvent. Traditionally, the main additive was 10% methanol, which gave rise to methylated spirits. There are diverse industrial uses for ethanol, and therefore literally hundreds of recipes for denaturing ethanol. Typical additives are methanol, isopropanol, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone, denatonium,[1] and even (uncommonly) aviation gasoline.



In the phrase denatured alcohol, denatured means "a specific property of ethanol, its usefulness as a beverage, is removed". The ethanol molecule is not denatured in the sense that its chemical structure is altered.



Uses

A common use is as a fuel for marine and ultra-light camping (backpacking) stoves. Its main advantages are its low cost, its ability to be extinguished by water, the fact that it is not explosive, and its ability to be transported without special containers. However, safety concerns do arise from the near-colourless flame with which alcohol burns. In brightly-lit areas, an alcohol flame can be essentially invisible, creating a potential hazard wherein persons can be burned by contacting flames they cannot see.

Denatured alcohol, also called perfumer's alcohol, is used in the production of colognes. It is similar to ethanol, but has additives in it, making it unsafe to consume. Denatured alcohol is used rather than isopropyl alcohol because it has no odor and will not mask the scent of the cologne.
