Once a slave, always a slave.
Basically, It's a state of mind, which only finds comfort in it, & being slavish has some benefits.

A human being can be a slave of so many things: of other human beings, of gods or religions, of ideas, of fear, of passion, of anger, of wrath, of habit.

Once people get to it, they get used to it; being a slave has some sort of parks & benefits, those includes not having burden of responsibility, living in comfort zone & changing the owner if it's necessary.

If slavish people loss their owner or the god got dethorned, they feel helpless, life becomes meaningless journey without a goal; resulting they find a new god to serve, to live, they succumb themselves to newly created figures, & turn these new figures into godly status.
