When Humanity Has a Color

There’s a curious pattern in the way society, particularly the elite class, responds to street children. If a person is seen begging with fair-skinned children, the immediate assumption often made is that the children have been abducted or are not biologically related to the beggar. Concerns are raised, questions are asked, and occasionally, authorities are notified.

But here’s the striking part: the same level of concern is rarely, if ever, extended to dark-skinned street children. No one stops to ask whether they’re stolen or to question their safety. It’s as if their plight doesn’t trigger the same “humanity alarm” that fair-skinned children do.

It’s troubling to realize that our collective empathy seems to come with an unspoken condition—activated more readily for those with lighter skin tones. This silent bias underscores a grim reality: in many instances, humanity itself seems to have a color preference.
