আদি বাংলার ইতিহাস

(প্রাগৈতিহাসিক যুগ থেকে ১২০৫ খ্রিষ্টাব্দ) পর্ব ২৫



অনেক ইউরোপীয় বণিক ও চীনদেশীয় পরিব্রাজক বাংলাদেশ ভ্রমণ করে অনেক চমকপ্রদ বর্ননা রেখে গেছেন। তাঁদের বর্ণনায় এদেশের প্রকৃতি, অধিবাসী এবং সামাজিক ও অর্থনৈতিক ব্যবস্থার প্রতিফলন রয়েছে। তাঁরা অল্পকালের জন্য এদেশে বসবাস করেছিলেন এবং এর জলবায়ু সম্পর্কে তাঁদের ব্যক্তিগত অভিজ্ঞতা ছিল। ইবনে বতুতা কয়েক বছরএদেশে ছিলেন। তিনি বাংলাদেশের ভূয়সী প্রশংসা করে গেছেন, আবার বাংলাকে সব ভাল জিনিসের নরক বলেও উল্লেখ করেছেন।



প্রাথমিক অবস্থায় জঙ্গলকীর্ণ স্থলভূমি ও বদ্ধ জলাশয়, খাল, বিল, হাওড়, বাওড় প্রভৃতির কারণে পরিবেশ হয়তো মানব বসতির জন্য তেমন আরামপ্রদ ছিল না, কিন্তু জঙ্গল পরিষ্কার করে জলাভূমি ভরাট হতে থাকলে আবহাওয়াতেও অনেক পরিবর্তন আসে। প্রতিকূল পরিবেশ অনেক অনুকুল হয়ে যায়। রোগ-বালাই কমে যায়,কিন্তু বৈচিত্র্যের সৌন্দর্য স্পষ্ট হয়ে ধরা পড়ে। বাংলা হয়ে উঠে মানব বসতির জন্য অত্যন্ত আকর্ষণীয় স্থান।



বাংলার ভূপ্রকৃতি সম্পর্কে বিশেষ করে চীনা পরিব্রাজকদের বর্ণনা ইতিপূর্বে অন্য অধ্যায়ে আলোচনা করা হয়েছে। এ প্রসঙ্গে ইদানিংকালের ইউরোপীয় পর্যটকদের একজন James J. Novak e‡jb, ‘For sheer loveliness there is no land on earth more beautiful, with a climate more pleasant, than Bangladesh ৩৯.



প্রায় দুই শতাব্দী পূর্বের একজন ইংরেজ বলেছিলেন No country which is dead level and unadorned by elegant arts can be more beautiful than that through which I have today come. It is one continuous field yielding the richest crops, from all the stiffness of regular fences, only interrupted by natives’ cottages concealed in groves of fruit trees, that are variegated with all the irregularity of luxurious nature.’ 4০



বাংলার বিখ্যাত লেখক নিরোদ চৌধুরী দেশের বিভিন্ন রূপ-বৈচিত্রের বর্ণনা দিতে গিয়ে অক্ষরের সাহায্যে বাংলার ছবি এঁকেছেন। তিনি বাংলার আকাশের বর্ণনা দিতে গিয়ে বলেন, ‘Our sky was a soft infinity rising from the earth to the unknown and the unknowable in equally soft steps. Nearest to us were the clouds, never resting, never in one place, never of one color, never of one tone. At sunrise and sunset our minds could soar u through their pile on pile and layer on layer, of yellow, gold, orange, red, pink and grey to the blue spaces beyond and our child mind did go up. The blue, too, was of the softest, not even k’ang-Hsi blue was softer- and it seemed to be the color of space condensed into mist. At night, we could see stereoscopic distances and depths within it, regions after regions of the planets, of the galactic stars, of the star clouds of extra-galactic systems, without end from galaxy to galaxy, and never offering any friction to the mind in its ascent to the stellar universe. The wonder with which all of us were born could never die under that sky.’
